An “internet TV” service that allows people to switch between television and the web on the same set is to be launched in the UK by Google.
The news should officially be announced Friday by Google’s Eric Schmidt who is giving a lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
Google TV hasn’t been very successful so far, according to Logitech‘s Q4 2011 fiscal year earnings. The company was one of Google’s partners for the service, but its sales of Google TV-related products fell short of expectations.
Google’s expansion of the service to the UK, however, shows that the company is far from giving up on this project.
According to the company, Google TV will allow people to search all of the content on the TV and the internet by using a single click.
The service will also allow viewers to switch between the TV and the internet on their main screen without having to adjust any cables.
iPhone 5 release date rumors are swirling again as a new report says an AT&T vice president has confirmed plans to launch the phone in early October.
On Friday, a post from Boy Genius Report said one of its high-level AT&T sources had confirmed that a company vice president had told several employees the device would be out in early October. In addition, the executive told a group of managers to expect things to get busy during the next 35 to 50 days, asking them to prepare their teams accordingly.
The device’s release date has been the subject of much anticipation on the web lately, with alternate reports fluctuating between September and October as possible time frames for the launch. At the beginning of this month, All Things Digital said the next generation iPhone would come out in October. But just last week, a report from a Japanese website indicated the device would be released in September, during a rumored Apple media event. Meanwhile, during his company’s last earnings call, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said he expected the phone out in the fall.
In the past, newer versions of the iPhone have typically been released during Apple’s summer Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). But that didn’t happen this year, following the release of the Verizon iPhone 4 in February.
Tablet computers running Google’sAndroid software will catch up with Apple’siPad and surpass it in 2016, research firmInforma said.
Informa said it expects Apple’s current 75 percent market share to fall to 39 percent in 2015, when Android market share will grow to 38 percent.
“From 2013, as cheaper and more advanced Android tablets enter the market, we forecast that sales will pick up considerably, eventually surpassing iPad sales in 2016,” analyst David McQueen said in a statement on Wednesday.
Samsung Electronics Galaxy Tab has been the best-selling Android tablet so far, but also other vendors including Motorola Mobility use it on their devices.
“We have seen a huge explosion in the tablet market in recent years, driven primarily by the iPad, and we estimate that the market will go from strength to strength, growing from under 20 million tablets sold in 2010, to over 230 million in 2015,” McQueen said.
