Microsoft Launches Windows 8

Posted by on Wednesday, 14 September, 2011

Say hello to Windows 8, Microsoft’s next-generation operating system.Microsoft will post the first developer preview beta of Windows 8 late , the company announced as it showed off the new OS running on a Samsung tablet.

The 5,000 developers in attendance will each get their copies along with a tablet produced by Samsung, preloaded with this early edition of Windows 8. The “Developer Preview PC,” as it is called, runs an Intel Core i5 processor, a 1366 -by-768 pixel touch sensitive display, a 64GB solid state drive, and 4GB of DDR3 memory.

Such a portable device is typical of the new tablets and touch screen devices Microsoft is hoping Windows 8 will power. “Things are a lot different than in 1995, the last time Windows went through a major change,” Sinosfky said.

Windows 8 is Microsoft’s first significant step beyond the traditional desktop-bound OS, as well as the first major challenger that company has presented to Apple’s popular iPad.

What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows?

Posted by on Monday, 8 August, 2011

This article describes the differences between the 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and the 64-bit versions of Windows 7

Note To use a 64-bit version of Windows 7, you must have a computer that has a 64-bit processor. Also, you must have 64-bit device drivers for the devices that are in the computer.

To determine which Windows 7  platform is installed yourself, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. The operating system appears as follows:
    • For a 64-bit version operating system, “64-bit Operating System” appears for the system type under System.
    • For a 32-bit version operating system, “32-bit Operating System” appears for the system type under System.

The main differences between the 32-bit versions of Windows 7  and the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 relate to memory accessibility, memory management, and enhanced security features. The security features that are available in the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 include the following:

  • Kernel Patch Protection
  • Support for hardware-backed Data Execution Protection (DEP)
  • Mandatory driver signing
  • Removal of support for 32-bit drivers
  • Removal of the 16-bit subsystem

One of the greatest advantages of using a 64-bit version of Windows 7  is the ability to access physical memory (RAM) that is above the 4-gigabyte (GB) range. This physical memory is not addressable by 32-bit versions of Windows 7.

Depending on the version of Windows 7  that is installed, a 64-bit version of Windows 7  supports from 1 GB of RAM to more than 128 GB of RAM. The ability to address more physical memory lets Windows  7 minimize the time that is required to swap processes in and out of physical memory. Therefore, Windows 7 can manage processes more efficiently. This memory management feature helps improve the overall performance of Windows 7

Advantages when you install a 64-bit version of Windows 7

  • Increased memory support beyond that of the 4-GB addressable memory space that is available in a 32-bit operating system
  • Increased program performance for programs that are written to take advantage of a 64-bit operating system
  • Enhanced security features
What to consider when you install a 64-bit version of Windows 7
  • 64-bit device drivers may not be available for one or more devices in the computer.
  • Device drivers must be digitally signed.
  • 32-bit device drivers are not supported.
  • 32-bit programs may not be fully compatible with a 64-bit operating system.
  • It may be difficult to locate programs that are written specifically for a 64-bit operating system.
  • Not all hardware devices may be compatible with a 64-bit version of Windows 7

Microsoft disclose Windows 8

Posted by on Wednesday, 1 June, 2011

Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface. A Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse.

Here are a few aspects of the new interface..
•    Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.
•    Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.
•    Fluid, natural switching between running apps.
•    Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.
•    Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.
•    Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

Although the new user interface is designed and optimized for touch, it works equally well with a mouse and keyboard. Micrsoft approach means no compromises — user get to use whatever kind of device you prefer, with peripherals you choose, to run the apps you love. This is sure to inspire a new generation of hardware and software development, improving the experience for PC users around the world.

Windows 8 apps use the power of HTML5, tapping into the native capabilities of Windows using standard JavaScript and HTML to deliver new kinds of experiences. These new Windows 8 apps are full-screen and touch-optimized, and they easily integrate with the capabilities of the new Windows user interface. There’s much more to the platform, capabilities and tools than we showed today.

Windows 8 apps can use a broad set of new libraries and controls, designed for fluid interaction and seamless connectivity. Apps can add new capabilities to Windows and to other apps, connecting with one another through the new interface.

The video below introduces a few of the basic elements of the new user interface.

Mozilla Releases Firefox 6 Into The Wild

Posted by on Monday, 30 May, 2011

Mozilla on Friday flipped what’s to become its Firefox 6 browser over to the Aurora channel where it’s now available for download and testing. The Aurora channel is where Mozilla offers up early builds with the “newest innovations” before they make the jump to beta, and then eventually released as a final build.

This early version of Firefox 6 introduces a Data Management Window as an experimental feature that provides control over the access that specific websites have to your browsing data, including cookies, passwords, and location information. In the Aurora build, you access this feature by typing “about:permissions” (no quotes) in the Awesome Bar.

There’s also a revamped Add-ons Manager with Plugin Check to quickly verify compatibility of installed plugins, and if you use Panorama to group tabs, Firefox 6 purportedly offers faster startup times by “allowing power Panorama uses to load saved tab groups only when using Panorama.” Firefox 6 in Aurora form also boasts improved support for HTML5, DOM level 3, server sent events, networking technologies, and other tools designed to make a developer’s like easy when building advanced web apps.

You can download Firefox 6 from here.
